Who would have guessed that the course of the French History was going to change when a little Corsican boy – named Napoléon Bonaparte – set foot in metropolitan France in 1778. Feeling abandoned by his family in a foreign territory, he devoted himself to his studies with the aspiration that one day he will give Corsica back its freedom. In the end, it turned out that his accomplishments would go far beyond his initial dreams. Having played a key role in the French Revolution, he became the First Consul (1799- 1804) and the First Emperor (from 1804 to 1814 and again briefly in 1815). Till this day, Napoléon Bonaparte is considered to be one of the greatest military leaders in the world, as he succeeded in expanding his empire over the years thanks to its outstanding military tactics and strategies.

Anyhow, having looked at his Astrological Chart, one would have foreseen that Napoléon Bonaparte was not destined at all to live an ordinary life.

Character traits

For instance, the presence of Jupiter in the 1st House of a Scorpio Ascendant points to some important qualities of character and spirit needed to become a great leader. In line with his Chart, without a doubt, Napoléon was a self-confident, ambitious, and highly dominant person.  Hungry for power, he was driven by the desire not only to climb the social ladder but also to own the world. Both the Sun in the 10th House of Lion and Mars in the 11th House of Virgo have reinforced these main character features essential for a leader, including an active and energetic mindset. Moreover, Pluton Retrograde in the 3rd House of a Capricorn also reveals the presence of strong revolutionary ideas as well as oratory and persuasion skills. With the North Node of the Moon of Sagittarius in the 2nd House, without doubt, Napoléon has succeeded in life, following his inner voice.

It is worth mentioning that the stellium in the 9th House (with the presence of the three planets namely Saturn, Venus, and Mercury) reflects well Napoléon’s thirst for knowledge, his inspiration for philosophical thinking as well as his interest in expanding his empire and conquering foreign territories.

Family life

As regards his family relations, the Pluton Retrograde in the 3rd House of a Capricorn points to some sensitiveness towards his father. Indeed, his early death from stomach cancer has put strong family responsibilities on the shoulders of the young Napoléon. This is also supported with Saturn being in opposition to the Moon. As it would have been expected with the presence of the Moon also in the 3rd House of a Capricorn, Napoléon finds himself under the burden of high expectations from his dominant mother. With Uranus ruling the 4th House, Napoléon’s family also has enjoyed an extraordinary and comfortable life considering that his siblings were appointed to high-ranking positions. With Neptune in the 10th House of Virgo, it is not surprising that Napoléon has been also taking financial care of his family and close inner circle as well as succumbing to the luxurious and excessive whims of his first wife Joséphine (marked by the presence of Uranus in the 7th House of a Taurus).

But later in time, Napoléon has faced strong disappointments and betrayals from this close inner circle. For instance, the square between Uranus and Mercury reflects well the growing difference of opinion especially with his brother Louis Napoléon Bonaparte who had been ruling over the Kingdom of Holland, and with his brother-in-law Joachim Murat who was given the title of King of Naples.

Romantic relationships

Furthermore, looking at his romantic relationships, as it would be expected with the presence of Chiron Retrograde in the 5th House of a Pisces, Napoléon had a very dynamic but at the same time a very tormenting love life as well. From the moment he set his eyes on the widow Joséphine de Beauharnais, he fell desperately in love, not able to imagine a life without her (not surprising with Venus being in opposition with Pluton).  After marrying her, Napoléon would, however, soon suffer from her absence and silence, and later from her betrayals. While deciding to continue his union with Joséphine as he became very fond and attached to her two children from the first marriage, he also started to live parallel lives. The roles have thus been reversed, this time with Joséphine fighting for her marriage and trying to earn back the Emperor’s attention. As hinted by the presence of Chiron Retrograde in the 5th House of a Pisces, he even had illegitimate children but could not have a child from his official wife Joséphine whilst he was in desperate need to present a legitimate heir for the succession of his throne. Despite much reluctance, he finally opted for divorce and accepted to marry an Austrian archduchess Marie-Louise who succeeded in giving him an heir. However, the turn of historical events has separated Napoléon from his son Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte (Napoleon II) sooner than expected, preventing him to enjoy fulling his “long-awaited” fatherhood.

End of Napoléon’s success

The successful life he led has come to an end as he persisted in expanding the Empire’s territory and pursuing a fight against Russia. As it could be understood from the presence of Pluton Retrograde in the 3rd House of a Capricorn and Saturn in the 9th House of Cancer as well as the square between Mars and Moon, Napoléon was of a self-centred and stubborn character. Considering the Mercury in the 9th House of Lion and the Moon opposition to Mercury, Napoléon has accumulated enemies and traitors even within its close inner circle, thus growing mistrust and nourishing suspicious from any information and advice he would be receiving. His persistence thus to pursue his battle with Russia resulted in a defeat, leading to his capture, his abdication, and his forced exile to the island of Elba. Although he later managed to escape and to return to Paris to reclaim his emperor title, he was defeated once again after serving shortly as an Emperor. The history has repeated itself as he had to abdicate for the second time and was sent to exile to the island of Saint-Hélène, where he died in 1821 after long health struggles.
